BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO LONGBOARDING
EPISODE 4: THE NOSE RIDE
Welcome to Episode 4 of Beginner's Guide To Longboarding with Taylor Jensen: The Nose Ride.
If the cross step is how you get to the nose, then nose riding is why you go there. Or as 4x World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen (@taylorjensentj) explains, “That’s the staple of what longboarding is. It's nose riding."
In this episode, Taylor breaks down the history behind nose riding, how to read a wave and position your board to set one up, proper body mechanics from foot placement to rail pressure, and how to remain locked-in on the nose.
Nose riding traces back to Malibu in the mid-1960s, when surfers like David Nuuhiwa and Lance Carson first started locking into rides longer than anyone had ever seen. Modern boards have come a long way since then, with lighter construction and more refined shaping, but the design principles, like nose concave and tail rocker, still trace straight back to those original nose riders. But it’s the technique, more than anything else, that sets longboarding apart from every other style of wave riding.“Remember that positioning is everything,” explains Taylor. “Make sure you're in the pocket and that you're letting the wave do the work.”

EPISODE 3: THE CROSS STEP
Welcome to Episode 3 of Beginner's Guide To Longboarding with Taylor Jensen: The Cross Step.
If you've ever heard longboarding compared to dancing on a wave, much of that comes down to the cross step. As 4x World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen (@taylorjensentj) puts it, "Cross stepping is the most functional part of longboarding. It's how we get from tail to nose."
In this episode, Taylor breaks down why the cross step is the foundation of longboarding, how it helps you maintain trim, speed, and control, and the simple techniques that will make your surfing smoother, more connected, and more efficient.
Unlike shortboards and mid-lengths, longboards provide enough canvas to move freely up and down the board. It's that constant movement—maintaining pressure, trim, and flow—that gives longboarding its distinctive rhythm and is the reason it's so often described as "dancing" on a wave.

Episode 2: The Right Board
Welcome to Episode 2 of Beginner's Guide To Longboarding with Taylor Jensen, The Right Board.
One of the biggest factors in progressing as a longboarder is choosing the right board. In this episode, 4x World Longboard Champion Taylor Jensen heads to Surf Ride to break down the key differences between traditional, high-performance, and hybrid longboards, explaining how each design changes the way a board glides, trims and turns.
Whether you're buying your first longboard or looking to expand your quiver, understanding how rocker, bottom contour, outline, volume, and fin setup influence performance will help you choose a board that matches your ability, your local waves, and the style of surfing you want to pursue.
From traditional longboards like the Singleton and TJ Hull Rider, to high-performance models like the TJ Pro and TJ Pro V, and versatile hybrids like The Gem and Special T, Taylor explains why there's no single "best" longboard, only the right board for the conditions and the surfer.
